Most leakage paths are ordinary business actions: e-mail attachments, browser uploads, USB devices, cloud drives, printing, screenshots, clipboard use and messaging applications. The risk may be malicious, but it is often an honest mistake.

DLP connects content with context

Effective DLP identifies sensitive content and evaluates context such as user, device, application, destination, channel, time and policy. Controls can allow, warn, require justification, encrypt, quarantine or block an action.

Start with classification

Before blocking anything, define data classes such as public, internal, confidential and restricted. Map personal data, customer records, source code, financial information and intellectual property to clear handling rules. Begin in monitoring mode to understand real workflows and reduce false positives.

Endpoint visibility matters

Endpoints are where users create and move data. A central DLP console provides event timelines, policy evidence, user/device context and response workflows. Integration with identity, ticketing and SIEM systems speeds investigation.

Successful deployment is iterative

Prioritise high-risk channels, involve business owners, communicate policies, measure exceptions and tune detection continuously. DLP should protect work, not prevent legitimate work.
